One of the great views you get as you walk up the Portico di San Luca. If you wish to learn about the history of this landmark monument of Bologna, click the link in my bio (where I also tell you about my guided walking tour there).
The monument symbol of Ferrara, the Estense Castle was erected in 1385 as a fortress against the citizens who had revolted to protest the high taxes. It later became the residence of the Este, who, in the Renaissance, hosted one of the most magnificent courts in Europe. This is the view over the moat (still filled with water!) and one of the four massive towers, architectural features that testify to its original defensive function. More on pretty Ferrara at the link in bio.
Sharing more photos of Ferrara, the subject of my latest blog post. Here’s medieval Via delle Volte, possibly the city’s most picturesque street, once Ferrara’s commercial hub located near the port on the Po river.
Happy Monday from sunny Bologna and the hills I love so much exploring on foot.
Did you know that Ferrara was in the Renaissance one of the major cultural centers in Europe? Its rulers, the powerful Este, were patrons of the arts and welcomed to their court some of the leading artists and intellectuals of the time, including Piero della Francesca, Titian, Leon Battista Alberti, Ariosto, Michelangelo, just to name the most famous. The intense cultural activity of Renaissance Ferrara is reflected in the palaces, churches and works of art that still grace this city 45 minutes north-east of Bologna, a day trip I’d recommend. Read all about it in my first blog post of 2019 (link in bio).
What a gorgeous day in Bologna to be walking up and down the hills of San Luca! Here I am in front of the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca, which stands on a hill 280 meters above the city center - the sanctuary and the city are connected via a monumental arcade, the famous Portico di San Luca, the longest portico in the world.
