The Apennines: Hiking Amid Forests and Historic Mountain Villages

This hiking excursion will make you discover ancient forested trails, villages and sanctuaries almost suspended in time, inside the Regional Park of Corno alle Scale, about an hour and a half from Bologna.

Our hike begins in Monteacuto delle Alpi, which has preserved its medieval structure and typical aspect of a mountain village, with its cobblestone streets, stone houses, sandstone-framed doors and windows, and fountains. Taking a trail in the woods, we’ll reach an old mill first, then the historic Sanctuary of Madonna del Faggio, built in 1722 by local mountain villagers in the spot where, according to legend, the Virgin had appeared to a young shepherd boy; we’ll continue to Tresana, the lovely village of hydrangeas, saved from abandonment thanks to local residents who worked to restore it and bring it back to life.
