The Apennines: Hiking on the Ridge, Suspended Between Emilia and Tuscany

We’ll hike between the Modena and Bologna Apennines, on a panoramic ridge at 1,700 meters above sea level, looking toward Emilia on one side, Toscana on the other. We’ll be walking a stretch of the long-distance trek known as Alta Via dei Parchi, observing surrounding peaks and high-altitude flowers, learning about the stories of smugglers and bandits, pilgrims and traders, who traveled upon these trails in the Middle Ages and before. We’ll eat lunch on the shores of Lago Scaffaiolo, the source of legends linked to the winds that pick up suddenly, or in the earliest mountain hut of the Apennines, and return via a forested trail.
